Labour Council have failed to reopen Hammersmith Bridge after three years -- despite Government paying two-thirds of the cost.
The bridge first closed in 2019, having been declared unsafe by structural engineers. Instead of doing maintenance work to keep the bridge open -- Labour let the bridge fall into disrepair.
'More than 20,000 journeys cross Hammersmith Bridge every day -- visiting family, commuting to work, travelling to school, attending appointments -- and for the last few years those 10 minute journeys have taken up to 2hrs,' says Councillor Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler.
A TaskForce was set up to accelerate the progress brining together all parties to reach an agreement on how to fix the bridge.
'We know the money is there to re-open the bridge. Government and TfL are waiting for the Labour Council to cough up their share -- and they're refusing to do that.'
Although the bridge is now open to walkers and cyclists -- residents are worried Labour won't open the bridge to cars again. With slow progress and Labour not caring -- calls are growing for the Conservatives to take control of Hammersmith and Fulham Council. Thousands of residents have signed a petition asking for changes to governance of the bridge.
